Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to contact Family in New York?
Email is always the best. 50% of our guests come from outside the United States. Very few, even those from the United States, call from the same time zone as New York. You may not appreciate the time we are able to return your call. Email also eliminates, on both sides, any confusion related to poor cell phone signals, overseas phone connections, regional accents, etc. Email provides for written documentation on both sides, helping to eliminate any confusion.

How far in advance should I book my tour?
We recommend booking your tour as soon as you know you want it! Most guests book about 6 weeks in advance, but during busy times like school vacations, holidays, or the fall foliage season, it's best to book even earlier to secure your spot.
What happens if I need to cancel my tour?
We understand plans can change! If you cancel 45+ days before your tour, you'll get a full refund of your deposit. Canceling 44–30 days before incurs a 20% fee, and less than 30 days before means a 50% fee. Want extra peace of mind? For 10% of your tour cost, you can opt for cancellation coverage, ensuring a full refund of your deposit if you cancel 24+ hours before your tour start time. Details will be included in your confirmation email.
Where does my tour start?
Your tour starts where it's most convenient for you! If you're using subways and buses, your guide will meet you in your hotel lobby. For driving tours, your driver-guide will greet you outside your hotel, airport, or cruise terminal in a black mini-van with your name displayed in the window.
Are child safety seats available for driving tours?
We prioritize your family's safety! While TLC regulations don't require child safety seats in cars-for-hire, we happily accommodate families traveling with them. For NYC driving tours, you're welcome to bring your own child safety seats. For tours outside NYC, we ask guests to provide: 1) a safety seat for each child aged 0–4 years, and 2) a booster seat for kids aged 5–8 years.
Are your guides certified and licensed?
Absolutely! Our guides are certified and licensed by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs. They've aced a 150-question exam covering NYC's geography, history, architecture, and more. Plus, they've passed background checks and always carry their photo ID license.
Is Family in New York licensed and insured to conduct driving tours?
Absolutely! Both our driver-guides and vehicles are fully licensed by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC). Consequently, we are also fully and appropriately insured by special insurance as required by the TLC.
