Our New York Sports Tour was deigned with you in mind! Whatever your love in sports, there's something in New York for you! Below you will find our standard New York Sports Tour, which we are happy to customize to focus on your specific interests in sports.
On our way up to the Bronx to Yankee Stadium, we will stop off at Rucker Park in Harlem.
Rucker was featured in the film "On Hallowed Ground: Streetball Champions of Rucker Park," which won a Sports Emmy Award. It is also the subject of the documentaries "Gun'in for that #1 Spot" and "The Real: Rucker Park Legends," which traces the history of the park and features many all-time greats like Abdul-Jabbar and Erving.
The court is named for a Harlem teacher and playground coach, who started a basketball tournament to help keep poor kids off the street and go to college. The players at Rucker excelled at "slam dunks," "cross-over dribbles" and "no look passes," all of which were foreign to the NBA. Rucker players introduced "playing above the rim" to the world. Rucker is sometimes called "The Home of Entertainer's Basketball."
Although many professional basketball players played at Rucker after gaining prominence (including in the NBA's Summer Pro League), many others developed their basketball skills at Rucker prior to becoming notable in the sport. Those who played ball at Rucker include: Earl Manigault; Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain; Julius "Dr. J" Erving; Earl "The Pearl" Monroe; Lebron James; Stephon Marbury; Kobe Bryant; Vince Carter; Allen Iverson; and many more.
We keep a few basketballs in the back of the van, if you want to hone your skills at Rucker. While at the courts, we we will also show you the sight of the sports historic Polo Grounds just across the street.
Next, on to Yankee Stadium. We will tour the stadium, visit the Yankees' Museum and spend time in Monument Park.
Then over to Flushing Meadows and Citi Field, the stadium where the New York Mets play. If you want, you can swap out the Yankee Stadium for a tour of CitiField. Minimally, we can stop and look around in the team store.
While in Flushing Meadows, we will show you the Billie Jean King Tennis Center and Arthur Ashe Stadium - home of the US Open, the world’s highest-attended annual sporting event. The tennis center is the world's largest, with 33 courts (including 12 indoors) and the Arthur Ashe Stadium is the world's largest tennis stadium seating over 23,000.
From basketball in Manhattan to baseball in the Bronx to tennis in Queens, we then move on to boxing (and where else?) - Brooklyn.
Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn has trained some of the most famous professional boxers and wrestlers in the world. These include: Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Sonny Liston, Leon Spinks, Floyd Patterson, Larry Holmes and many more. Gleason's has 81 trainers, 4 boxing rings, 1 wrestling ring, 6 speed bags and 8 heavy bags (ranging in weight from 75 to 500 pounds). All in action from early morning until late at night. Gleasons tests all of the new products for Everlast Boxing Equipment. On our tour, we will stop in and watch some of today's and tomorrow's boxing and wrestling champions hone their skills.
On our way out of Brooklyn, we'll swing by the Barclay Center - home of the Brooklyn Nets.
Back into Manhattan, we'll stop at The West Fourth Street Courts, also known as "The Cage". "The Cage" has become one of the most important tournament sites for "Streetball," and is noted for its non-regulation size. Because it is so small, more emphasis is given to "banging inside," or tough physical play. Usually the sidelines are ignored. To some, this may look like a steel-cage wrestling match. A-Train says, "If you don't like a physical brand of basketball, stay away from West 4th."
Former NBA players Anthony Mason, Smush Parker and Paul Bode are some of the nationally recognized ballplayers to learn their tough style of play at The Cage. Dr. J, Walter Berry and Jayson Williams also played here.
Finally, we will take you by the world famous Madison Square Garden- home to the New York Knicks basketball team and New York Rangers hockey team. If you want, you can swap out the Yankee Stadium tour for a tour of Madison Square Garden.
